Tasmania’s Agriculture Industry is becoming very concerned about future access to fresh water now that Hydro Tasmania have a near monopoly over our water . Will there be a conflict of interest for the directors of Hydro Tasmania when it comes to allocating future water? They will need to sell it through Bass Link to keep up their payments while the farming industry will need to use our water to develop Tasmania’s billion dollar rural expansion . Tasmania does not generate electricity from coal or gas it comes from our fresh water reserves. The 40 million dollars that the government has rented our dams out for , generating plant and the water rights that go with it, seems insignificant when you consider the value of irrigated crops, orchard’s, vineyards and herds that could use our excess water. However, without future water rights Tasmania will experience a negative impact on farming capital being invested into our rural communities.
